The first edition of Schaal Sels (Sels Trophy) was held in 1921 in honour of Jacques-Charles Sels, a deceased Belgian sports journalist. Rik Van Looy, Herman Van Springel, Edwig Van Hooydonck, Wilfried Peeters, Tom Steels, Steven De Jongh and Niko Eeckhout are renowned winners. In recent years, the Antwerp based race developed up to UCI 1.1 status and in 2015 the track was successfully “restyled” with lots of unpaved roads and cobble stones.
In the near term, Schaal Sels has the ambition to become a “hors catégorie” race where the best professional road cyclists compete the best cyclo-cross riders. The period of late August / early September is a perfect period to bridge road cycling and cyclo-cross, which is very popular in this part of Europe.
